2007 Touareg, great SUV or financial pitfall?

Recently, I read the article on the VW Phaeton and how lovely the car was to own (until it broke), and it made me think of another VW of that era that shared its part with a more expensive relative, the VW Touareg.

I found a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for sale and it seems like a great deal, it only has 92k miles for only $6,995, right on par with a Toyota 4Runner of that year (if not cheaper)but it made me wonder how much of a financial pitfall would it be to own one? would be on par with owning a 2000's Land Rover?

Kinja'd!!!

I once steered away a friend from buying one but I wondered if she would have been better off with the Touareg than a 2006 330i she bought instead (which I also disagreed on, which also died of transmission problems) but now I see my self contemplating a touareg since I still see them on the road running.

the interior is classy, well built with nice leather and nice plastics. They are very good off road and I think their design has aged well considering its over 10 years old, while the efficiency and torque of the diesel is very tempting, I feel like the V6 may be the engine to go for, its the most popular engine and parts may be cheaper and easier to obtain.

will this be a financial pitfall? or just a mild financial slump to maintain?

I work with a lady that had a burgundy v6 one, loved it when it was working but it kept having major issues, (drive line, electronics, etc.) The last repair bill was going to be several thousand dollars - the dealer gave her a couple grand for it and she ended up with a new golf last year. It was a good looking rig - you are absolutely right about the leather seats, they were nice.

My father has a manual 2013 model... he likes it... Don’t think it has any particular issues...

I’m beyond shocked that that expensive of an SUV doesn’t even have power seats... This must be a complete stripper model...

They’re lovely trucks but a nightmare to keep on the road. Yes, like an early-00's Rover.

Sister in-law had one in that spec. Her and her husband make big bucks and it bled them dry. They are Audi people normally if that tells you anything about their pain threshold for expensive repairs. That said it never stranded them that I know of but was in a constant state of repair and this was all from new to 60k miles. It can only get worse with age but at the same time maybe someone with the roll the sleeves up and repair themselves attitude could fare much better if picked up cheap enough. I personally wouldn’t buy it.

The way I see it now, it’s just one less thing to break.

A used VW should never be the same price as a used Toyota of a similar model/year/mileage. Crackpipe.

Power seats are nice, but how often do you actually have to move your seat? It’s like having power windows in your house. Granted I move my drivers seat a lot, but that’s because it’s a regular cab truck and I need to get to my limited dry storage. If it had power seats moving it forward to get to the back would take too long.

I move mine constantly. Averaging 6000 miles a month there’s a lot of straight sitting and have to adjust as I go to keep circulation and posture adjustments.

I probably do adjust my seat on long road trips a bit too, but most of the time it’s just set it and forget it for me. I can’t imagine many people that commute, or do errands change the seating arrangement that often.

6000 miles a month is a bit of an extreme. I can get behind power door locks, power windows, even power mirrors are handy, but power seats are just gimmicky.

For me, it’s not the powered part so much as having the ability to make more adjustments to seating position than just forwards and backwards.

I had a 2006 LR3, which would have been a competing product to this, including both having air suspension. These seem to have a worse reputation for reliability than the Land Rovers, but that may just be perception. Although, despite its faults, the LR3 was a big jump in quality over the Discovery II.

Personally, I like any vehicle you can get a V10 diesel in with more torque than almost any domestic pickups of its time. That being said, make sure you stock some money away for repairs.

Go for the V8, especially for that gen (I have one). 108k miles and still running strong, though mine is in need of some overdue maintenance and updating.

We ave 2006 V8 bought new. Very nice when it runs. About 100K now. Absurdly expensive to repair. By comparison, our 2008 Rover with 145K is much more reliable and even nicer to drive. Buy a good low mile Rover instead.

Thats true.. The only time I adjust my seat is after someone else drives my car. My seat setting is quite simple, however it most cars it requires a power seat.. All the way back, back of seat cushion as low as it will go, and front of cushion as high as it will go, with the seat back adjusted at a fairly upright angle.

They have aged well. Especially the paint, and exterior trim. Even ones that have sat outside their whole life, tend to look better than a same year Cayenne.

I would only get one with the VR6, because parts are cheaper. Your life will be a lot easier in a 4 Runner or Highlander though.

Look up vw 3.6 oil bolt, or audi 3.6 oil bolt. Scroll down a couple entries till you get to the failures heading. Read those.

On the other hand, I had a 2007 Q7 that ran great till we sold it at over 145k it was a 3.6 built in the suspect time for the oil bolt failure. But the only major expense we had was for the electric fuel pump, it has three, two mechanical and one electric. In tank that is, there is also a high pressure pump on the engine.

We loved ours, and would’ve kept it had we not needed room for baby boy number 3.

You have to research the model years and their known issues, then go from there.

I know I specifically looked for one without a pano moon roof, as they would leak and trash the gps in the rear hatch area.

Good luck.
